Korean Music Awards to Honor Quality

(SEOUL KR) : The Korean Music Awards (KMA) will be held March 30 this year, and the organizers have promised another year of fairness and diversity.

"The Korean Music Awards has gone through a rough time for the past couple of years after the government decided to stop supporting it. But thanks to fans and firms that noticed the importance of such an event, the KMA is now back on track,'' Kim Chang-nam, the KMA committee head and head of the jury, said during a press conference at cultural space Platoon Kunstehalle, southern Seoul, Tuesday.

The event has 25 categories, including the Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Netizens' favorites and a Life Achievement Award. Singer Lee So-ra was nominated in five categories― the Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Musician of the Year, Best Pop Album and Best Pop Song ― the most among fellow singers. This year's Life Achievement Award will be given to folk singer and composer Jo Dong-jin.

A total of 60 music experts, radio show producers, critics and journalists participated as judges this year, adding eight to the previous 52.

"We are planning to add more judges to the panel in the following years. It's important we don't miss any good songs or bands and with various experts working together, we hope to discover talented bands in the future as well,'' Kim added.

2009 KMA Rock Album of the Year winners, Galaxy Express, crowns 2010 KMA Musician of the Year, Seoul Electric BandNumerous award events are held by networks and music labels at the end of the year, but these star-studded ceremonies have been criticized for being too ``star-oriented'' regardless of musical talent and potential. However, unlike such events at which idol bands dominate not only the winners but also the nominees, the KMA was launched to deal with various genres and artists both mainstream and not as well known.

While idol bands such as Girls' Generation and Brown Eyed Girls were nominated for the Album of the Year and Song of the Year, respectively, this year, relatively unknown bands were also chosen, including the Black Skirts, Swallow, 3rd Line Butterfly and Gukkasten.

"We have been criticized for giving out awards to singers and bands that are not popular and ignoring popular bands, but this is not true. We have given awards to numerous `mainstream' bands, including Big Bang and the Wonder Girls, and we plan to continue this. Our aim is to recognize all genres of music, not just on one specific popular genre at the time,'' said Park Eun-seok, one of the judges and also a music critic.

Last year, the KMA was held in a smaller venue than before, which was a result of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism choosing to stop giving 30 million won to promote the event. The ministry backed out a week before the actual award ceremony, disappointing both organizers and fans.

2010 KMA @ Platoon KunsthalleThis year, however, the KMA will have a fresh start, as more firms and fans have started to recognize its goal to create a practical and fair event for everyone.

"The problem of the current music scene in Korea is that we don't recognize the diversity of genres. However, there has been small movements where listeners have started to appreciate other genres, and we want to pull them out from the shadows, give them credit for their great work and share their music with the public,'' Park said.

제7회 한국대중음악상의 주인공은 서울전자음악단이었다. 이들은 30일 저녁 서울 논현동 복합문화공간 플래툰 쿤스트할레에서 열린 시상식에서 최고 영예인 ‘올해의 음반’을 비롯해 ‘올해의 음악인’ ‘최우수 록 음반’까지 3개의 트로피를 거머쥐었다. 서울전자음악단은 한국 록의 대부 신중현의 두 아들 윤철(보컬·기타)씨와 석철(드럼)씨가 속한 3인조 록 밴드다. 지난해 2집 앨범 <라이프 이스 스트레인지>를 발표해 작품성과 완성도 면에서 평단의 압도적 지지를 받았다.

선정위원들 3차 투표까지 해도 끝내…After 3 Rounds of Voting

다음으로 주목 받은 음악인은 인디 록 밴드 국카스텐이다. 2008년 ‘이비에스(EBS) 스페이스 공감’의 신인발굴 프로젝트 ‘헬로 루키’ 연말 결선에서 대상을 받으며 화려하게 등장한 이들은 지난해 발표한 데뷔 앨범 <국카스텐>으로 ‘올해의 신인’과 ‘최우수 록 노래’(‘거울’) 수상자로 선정됐다. 패기와 도전 정신을 높이 평가하는 ‘올해의 신인’에는 인디 록 밴드 아폴로18도 함께 뽑혔다. 선정위원들이 3차 투표까지 했음에도 끝내 우열을 가리지 못해 공동 수상자로 선정했다.

2010 KMA Song of the Year winners, Girl's Generation‘올해의 음반’ 못잖은 위상을 갖는 ‘올해의 노래’는 소녀시대의 ‘지’에게 돌아갔다. 지난해 초 걸그룹 열풍의 신호탄을 쏘아올린 노래로, 만듦새에 있어서도 상당한 예술적 성취를 이뤘다는 평이 많았다. 이소라와 브라운아이드걸스는 각각의 장르 분야에서 2관왕을 차지했다. 이소라는 7집 앨범으로 ‘최우수 팝 음반’과 ‘…노래’를, 브라운아이드걸스는 ‘아브라카타브라’가 담긴 앨범 <사운드-지(G)>로 ‘최우수 댄스&일렉트로닉 음반’과 ‘…노래’를 휩쓸었다.

누리꾼들이 분야별 모든 후보를 대상으로 투표해 선정하는 ‘네티즌이 뽑은 올해의 음악인’에서는 정엽(남자 부문), 백지영(여자 부문), 소녀시대(그룹 부문)가 1위를 차지했다. 어느 정도 음악성을 담보하면서도 대중의 사랑을 많이 받았다는 뜻이기에 상의 의미가 각별하다. 시상식 본상과는 성격이 다르지만, 이 분야까지 포함한다면 소녀시대와 정엽은 2관왕이 된다.

대중음악계 탄탄한 네 바퀴 시대 Stronger Korean Music Industry Steering on Solid 4 Wheels

전체 수상 결과를 보면, 지난 한 해 우리 대중음악계가 더욱 풍성하고 윤택해졌음이 확연히 드러난다. 주류에서 음악적 성취를 꾸준히 모색해온 음악인, 대중의 사랑을 받는 아이돌 그룹, 자기만의 음악 철학과 색깔을 고집스럽게 지키는 인디 음악인, 비주류 장르에서 고군분투해온 음악 장인 등이 두루 포함됐기 때문이다. 어느 한 쪽만 비대하게 커져 뒤뚱거리는 게 아니라 탄탄한 네 바퀴로 안정적으로 달리는 수레와 같다.

2010 KMA Hip-Hop/Rap Album of the Year, Drunken Tiger서울전자음악단, 이소라, 드렁큰타이거, 정엽 등은 주류에서 자기만의 음악 세계를 확고히 다진 경우다. 소녀시대, 브라운아이드걸스 등은 걸그룹 열풍을 타고 큰 인기를 누리면서도 아이돌 음악 수준을 한 단계 드높인 경우다. 국카스텐, 검정치마, 브로콜리너마저, 아폴로18 등은 인디 음악계에서 탄탄한 기본기와 독특한 개성을 앞세워 주류 음악계에 강한 충격파를 던진 경우다. 재즈 피아니스트 송영주, 크로스오버 기타리스트 박주원, 프리 재즈를 선보인 김책과 정재일 등은 비주류 장르에서 높은 음악적 성취를 일궈낸 경우다.

후보만으로도 쟁쟁, 간발의 차 Nominee Choices Are So Competitive, Picking Winners Just Too Tough

비록 간발의 차이로 상을 받지는 못했지만 후보에 오른 것만으로도 음악성을 충분히 인정받은 다른 음악인들의 면면을 봐도 이런 경향은 더욱 또렷해진다. 윤상, 박지윤, 바비킴, 김창완 밴드, 투애니원(2NE1), 카라, 샤이니, 장기하와 얼굴들, 스왈로우, 3호선버터플라이, 노리플라이 등 다양한 음악인들이 분야별로 고루 포진돼 있다.

이날 시상식은 플래툰 쿤스트할레, 국내 음악의 외국 유통을 맡는 에이전시 디에프에스비(DFSB Kollective), 포털 사이트 다음, 한겨레신문사 등의 후원으로 열렸다. 음악인, 음악산업·언론 관계자, 한국대중음악상 후원회원, 초청 관객 등이 참가한 가운데 자유로운 파티 형식으로 진행됐다. 가수 알렉스가 사회를 맡았고, 강산에, 이지형, 로다운30+신윤철, 탱고·재즈 밴드 라벤타나 등이 축하 공연으로 흥을 돋웠다.

2004년 제정된 한국대중음악상은 인기도나 방송 출연 빈도 같은 음악 외적인 요소를 배제하고 최대한 음악성 자체에만 초점을 맞춰 선정하는 상이다. 대중음악 평론가, 라디오 피디, 음악 담당 기자 등 다양한 분야의 음악 전문가 60명이 선정위원으로 참여하고 있다.

Korean Electro-House Band < Mad Soul Child > Breaks Out in the Big Apple!

(NEW YORK CITY USA) : Seoul-based creative agency, DFSB Kollective, is proud to announce that the live electro-house band, Mad Soul Child, has been invited to be the first ever electronica act to represent Korea at the prestigious CMJ Music Marathon in New York City (October 20-24, 2009).

During the five day extravaganza, Mad Soul Child is scheduled to perform with New Zealand alt-rockers, Steve Abel & The Chrysalids, and American indie sensations, The States, at the Village Underground (October 21st Wednesday @ 8pm). As the special headlining act at Swerve Media’s BaseNYC Party, Mad Soul Child will also be taking the stage at the legendary dance music venue, Hiro Ballroom (October 23rd Friday @ 11pm).
